UK Recycling's Give & Go Donation Stations Returned to Campus for Spring Move Out
Authored by: Camryn Mason
Each year during the last weeks of the semester, the University of Kentucky’s recycling partners place Give & Go Donation Stations in all residence hall lobbies. The goal of this program is to encourage students to donate rather than throw away usable unwanted items.
The Give and Go Donation Program is a collaboration among several University of Kentucky departments such as Recycling, Trucking, Residence Life, Campus Housing, Auxiliary Services, Sustainability, Big Blue Pantry, and Goodwill Industries of the Bluegrass occurring since the Fall of 2016.
Any student living on campus can participate in the program and are encouraged to donate items such as clothing, shoes, household items, bedding, and non-perishable, unopened food. All non-food items are donated to Goodwill, whereas non-perishable food items are donated to the Big Blue Pantry, an organization apart of the University of Kentucky that helps students that are experiencing food insecurity.
This year, there were 12,338 lbs. (6 tons) of items donated and diverted from the landfill, and of the 12,338 items donated, 1,750 lbs. were food items.
